“Sarah had always been afraid of the water. When her family moved to a lakeside town, she felt isolated as her classmates spent summers sailing and swimming. One day, her neighbour, an elderly woman named Mrs. Chen, noticed Sarah sitting alone by the lake and said, ‘I was afraid of water too, once.’”

第一段: “‘What changed?’ Sarah asked, looking up with curiosity. Mrs. Chen smiled gently and sat beside her on the wooden dock. ‘When I was your age, I nearly drowned in a river. For years, I couldn’t even look at water without trembling. Then one summer, my father took me to a quiet pond. He didn’t force me in. He just sat with me, day after day, until the fear lost its power.’ Mrs. Chen’s eyes drifted across the shimmering lake. ‘Fear is not something you fight. It is something you understand.’”

第二段: “The next morning, Sarah found Mrs. Chen waiting by the shore with two fishing rods. ‘Today, we fish,’ she said directly. Sarah hesitated but took the rod. As they sat side by side, the gentle lapping of waves became almost musical. Gradually, Sarah’s grip on the dock railing loosened. By the end of the week, she was wading ankle-deep in the shallows, laughing as the water swirled around her feet. She still couldn’t swim, but she no longer sat alone on the dock. The lake was no longer her enemy — it was becoming her friend.”

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your guidance
in improving my English writing skills over the past semester.
When I first enrolled in your class, I struggled to organise my
ideas and often made grammatical errors that obscured my meaning.
Your patient feedback on each essay, combined with your emphasis on
clear structure and precise word choice, has transformed my approach
to writing. I particularly valued your suggestion to read my work
aloud before submitting it — a technique that has helped me identify
awkward phrasing and improve the flow of my sentences.
As a result of your teaching, my writing grade has improved from
a B to an A, and I now feel confident expressing complex ideas in
English. I will carry these skills with me into university and
beyond.
Thank you once again for your dedication and encouragement. I hope
to keep in touch and share my future writing successes with you.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Dear Mr. Wang,
I am writing to apply for the volunteer position at the upcoming
International Cultural Exchange Activity.
I believe I am well-qualified for this role for the following reasons.
First, I have a strong command of English, having won the first prize in
the school English Speech Contest last year. Second, I am familiar with
Chinese culture and history, which enables me to introduce our traditions

as a volunteer at the city museum, where I developed excellent
communication and organisational skills.

“Twelve-year-old Tom had always dreamed of becoming a musician. When his school announced a talent show, he decided to play the piano. However, on the day of the performance, his hands trembled as he sat down at the piano. The audience fell silent.”

第一段: “He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. The first few notes came out hesitant and shaky, but as his fingers found their rhythm, the music began to flow smoothly. The melody filled the auditorium, carrying with it all the months of practice and the passion that had driven him to this moment. When he played the final chord, there was a moment of perfect silence — and then the audience erupted in thunderous applause.”

第二段: “Tom opened his eyes, stunned by the response. Tears welled up as he stood to bow, his trembling hands now steady with relief and joy. After the show, his music teacher approached him with a warm smile. ‘You didn’t just play the piano tonight, Tom. You shared your heart with everyone here.’ From that day forward, Tom no longer feared the stage. He had discovered that courage was not the absence of fear, but the determination to move forward despite it.”

Dear Classmates,
I am writing to share some practical suggestions for protecting our
environment, which I hope will be discussed at our upcoming class meeting.
Here are my suggestions. First, we should reduce the use of disposable
products. Bringing our own water bottles and shopping bags can significantly
cut down on plastic waste. Second, we should save energy by turning off
lights and electrical appliances when they are not in use. Even small actions,
such as using natural light during the day, can make a difference. Third,
we should recycle paper, bottles, and cans whenever possible. Setting up
recycling bins in our classroom and dormitories would make this easier.
In addition, I suggest we organise a monthly "Green Day" activity,
where we can plant trees, clean up litter around the campus, or invite
experts to give talks on environmental protection. Every effort counts,
and together we can build a more sustainable future.
I look forward to hearing your ideas at the meeting.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

“Lisa had always been a straight-A student. When her final exam results came out, she was shocked to find she had failed Mathematics. She couldn’t believe her eyes — she had studied so hard. That evening, she locked herself in her room, refusing to eat or talk to anyone.”

第一段: “Her mother knocked gently on the door. ‘Lisa, I know you’re disappointed, but locking yourself away won’t solve anything.’ After a long silence, Lisa opened the door. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered, ‘I don’t understand what went wrong. I studied every night.’ Her mother sat beside her and said softly, ‘Sometimes the hardest exams aren’t the ones on paper. They’re the ones that teach us how to handle failure.’”

第二段: “The next morning, Lisa asked her mother to help her make a new study plan. Instead of studying alone in her room, she joined a study group where they explained problems to each other. She also visited her Mathematics teacher, who helped her identify the concepts she had misunderstood. Within weeks, her confidence returned. She realised that one failure did not define her — it was how she responded to it that truly mattered.

Dear Mr. Wang,
I am writing to express my sincere apologies for not being able to attend yesterday's English Corner activity.
Unfortunately, I came down with a sudden fever yesterday morning and had to be taken to the hospital for medical treatment. I tried to inform you beforehand, but I was too ill to use my phone. I understand that my absence may have caused inconvenience to the activity, and I deeply regret any disruption this may have caused.
I am now recovering and hope to participate in the next English Corner. I would be grateful if you could share the materials or topics discussed yesterday so that I can catch up with what I missed.
Once again, I apologise for any inconvenience caused. I promise to make every effort to attend future activities.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

English writing on the Gaokao is like following a recipe. The format is the recipe card: it tells you what ingredients (paragraphs) to include and in what order. The introduction appetizer, the body main courses, and the conclusion dessert. Following the recipe ensures you do not forget any essential components.

Coherence is like the thread that stitches a quilt. Each sentence connects to the next with transition words and logical flow. Without the thread, the quilt falls apart. Learning to use transition words like however, therefore, and moreover is like learning the stitches that hold your writing together.

Mistake 1: Using informal language in application and formal letters

Section titled “Mistake 1: Using informal language in application and formal letters”

Gaokao English letters require formal register, but students often use contractions (I’m, can’t), slang, or casual phrasing. Formal letters should use “I am writing to…” not “I’m writing to…”, and “Yours sincerely” not “Best wishes.” The tone must match the relationship: use “Dear Sir/Madam” for unknown recipients and “Dear [Name]” when you know the person.

Mistake 2: Failing to use underlined keywords in读后续写

Section titled “Mistake 2: Failing to use underlined keywords in读后续写”

The读后续写 task requires using at least 5 underlined keywords from the original passage. Students often write cohesive continuations that omit these keywords, losing marks. Before writing, list all underlined words and plan where each will appear logically in your continuation. The keywords should fit the context, not be forced in awkwardly.

Mistake 3: Writing a conclusion that introduces new arguments

Section titled “Mistake 3: Writing a conclusion that introduces new arguments”

In persuasive and argumentative essays, the conclusion should synthesise existing points, not introduce new evidence or arguments. Students sometimes add a new example or a fresh line of reasoning in the final paragraph, which weakens the essay’s structure. The conclusion should restate the thesis, summarise the key arguments, and end with a broader statement or call to action.
